The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program is a 6 week, 10-item behavioral test created by the American Kennel Club and taught by an AKC APPROVED EVALUATOR. The CGC course teaches dogs good manners and responsible dog ownership to their owners. The test assesses obedience and social skills by having dogs perform the 10 tasks they learned in the course. Passing the CGC test earns the dog a nationally recognized certificate and can be a prerequisite for therapy dog programs and waived pet fees in some apartments.
The AKC Community Canine 6 week course is the next level of this program, requiring dogs to have an existing CGC award to earn the official CGCA title. The primary difference is that Community Canine tests a dog's skills in actual public settings, like busy sidewalks and real crowds, rather than in a controlled ring, focusing on real-world, advanced behavior.
AKC Urban CGC is a public access test that demonstrates dogs are well-behaved and well-trained when in public settings. AKC Urban CGC requires that the dog demonstrate CGC skills and beyond in a setting that includes traffic, crowds, noises, smells and other distractions that are present in a city or town. As with Canine Good Citizen, AKC Urban CGC is a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Urban CGC title. The Urban CGC test can be used by dog-friendly business (e.g., lodging, retail, transportation, public facilities) to recognize and accept dogs with good manners.
